Huey Lewis and The News Rock the Reno Hilton

Huey Lewis and the News played at the Reno Hilton Ampitheatre on September 19, 1997. They played some old songs, some new songs, and some a' capella songs. (Something Huey Lewis always says in the concerts.) The song list that night was spectacular. They sang, "100 Years From Now", "So Little Kindness", "I Ain't Perfect, But I'm Perfect for You", "Heart and Soul", "Power of Love", "60 Minute Man" ( a' capella), "It's All Right" (a' capella), "Heart of Rock N' Roll", "If This Is It", "Let Her Go, Start Over" ( a new one), "I Never Think About You" ( Also a new one which featured a guitar solo, a keyboard solo, and a solo from the horn section.) , "Surely", "But It's All Right" and they ended the set with the ever so popular "I Want A New Drug". In the encore they sang, "Couple Days Off", "Stuck With You" (Huey dedicated this song to the Newsliners.), "Plan B", and "Workin For A Livin".
The Reno Hilton ampitheatre seemed almost full. The opening band was
an upcoming band also from the bay area, "Box Set." Huey and the guys
took the stage at approximately 9 PM. When they got on the stage the crowd
went wild and the momentum was kept up throughout the whole show. The
people in the front section were allowed to approach the stage approximately
half-way through the show. There were lots of fans dancing and singing
that night. It's no wonder because Huey Lewis and the News always seem
to be able to pull off a great show.
The new songs sound great and seem to be leaning towards a more bluesy
sound. "Plan B" seems to give everyone in the band a solo. "I Never Think
About You" seems to have harsh lyrics, but is ultimately a very well written
song. (It's a song about a guy who recently broke up with his girlfriend.)
Both are good and will hopefully be seen on a new album. Sean's keyboards
really stood out in Reno, which was nice because it's usually not as easy
to hear him. Chris had a lot of guitar solos and gave an awesome performance
as usual. For those of you, who admire Bill's drumming, you'll be happy
to know that he was hot in Reno as well. The whole band sounded wonderful
and looked like they were having a lot of fun. Some of the newer bands
today could learn some things from these guys. There have been articles
before with headlines that read, "Huey Lewis and the News are back" but
they never left. They are still going strong and they are better than
ever. Huey Lewis and the News is the must see group of the future.
