Caesar's Palace; South Lake Tahoe - Well it's summertime, and while most sit back and enjoy the sun, Huey Lewis and the News are still going strong as they continue their 1998 tour. Just last weekend, (July 9-11) HLN made a brief but bold appearance at Caesar's Palace in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Performing one show each night, they continued to display that strong tradition of high energy rock 'n' roll.
They began the night with "(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful", then followed it right away with a brand new song entitled "My Other Woman's Got Another Man." Stylistically staying with their newer, bluesy sound, the song possessed a light humor as it was somewhat of a parody on a typical blues number. After that came select favorites such as "Heart & Soul", "Doin' It All For My Baby", "Power of Love", and "If This Is It". Then it was a capella time with "60 Minute Man", but not before Huey had the opportunity to introduce his colleagues of over 2 decades. "Bad is Bad" soon followed, forming a nice transition between the mellow mood of a capella and the powerful tunes of "The Heart of Rock 'n' Roll", and "Hip to Be Square". Always diverse, HLN cooled down again with the tragic ballads "Let Her Go and Start Over" and "He Don't Know", but then they bounced right back up with the peppy rhythm and soul of "But It's Alright". "I Want a New Drug" came right after, keeping the fans dancing on the edges of their seats, and then they closed with yet another new wonderful song, "We're Not Here For a Long Time, but We're Here For a Good Time". A very fitting number to end with, it was upbeat and fun, and the message itself made for an appropriate conclusion. With that, HLN existed the stage with standing ovations, and pleas for more music. The band as always returned for their encore, which began with "Plan B", a jazzy jam song that featured the very talented "News Brothers" horn section, and an intense solo from drummer Bill Gibson. Other songs in the encore included "Hope You Love Me Like You Say You Do", "Stuck With You", and finally they closed the evening with "Workin' For a Livin'".
Huey Lewis and the News once again achieved success in performing 3 excellent concerts in Tahoe, and they will continue to tour throughout the country well into the fall. Be sure to check out the tour dates listed to see when they will be appearing in a city near you!
