"Nobody can say they lost when a Huey Lewis & the News show was part of the festivities"

Atlantic City, NJ; Trump Plaza; March 5, 1999 - Nearly 900 people packed into the Trump Plaza theater in Atlantic City, NJ to witness the power of HLN in concert last Saturday, March 6th. The show started a little after 10 p.m., as several guests were still waiting to be seated when the concert began. The line of well-dressed attendees began forming way before 8 p.m. and snaked its way down a narrow hallway, up a set of stairs and throughout the casino. However, few were dressed better than the 10 stellar performers who took the stage and pounded out an emotional "Some Kind of Wonderful" to the delight of the screaming crowd. That was then followed up with "My Other Woman's Got Another Man". Like all the songs during the show, it was performed with the great passion and precision that is expected of HLN. They could instantly sell 800 copies of the new album after that one.

The audience was very diverse, with many seeing HLN for the first time, but the die-hard fans eventually demonstrated to the rest how to let loose as Huey and Co. led a spirited "Doin' It All for My Baby," soon followed by "Heart and Soul," and "Power of Love". The a capella portion of the show remains to be the differentiating live feature of this group, as they belted out "60 Minute Man" and "It's Alright". Then it was back to flat out rockin' with "The Heart of Rock & Roll," which included a nice solo from Johnny Colla. "If This Is It" was next, as Huey gladly accepted a rose from the crowd and displayed it in his blazer.

After that came "Hip to be Square," and "But It's Alright," which included Huey pounding on a xylophone with some "key" assistance from "the man in black" Jack Jacobsen. "I Want a New Drug" was followed by "We're Not Here for a Long Time, We're Here for a Good Time" to close the show. And they weren't there for a long time, as the show was barely over an hour long. But wait! The boys were back for "Plan B," as the "fabulous horn section" displayed their individual capabilities. Finally, "Workin' for a Livin" closed the show on a spirited note, but left most in attendance starving for more.

The casino setting is definitely different from a concert hall venue, and it seemingly restricts Huey onstage a bit, although he did venture out onto some of the front row tables. Overall, it was a great show with lots of harmonica jamming by Huey and clean playing and singing by all the News. They were there for a "good time" and it is obvious that this fine set of musicians will be around for a "long time."
