Greeley/Grand Juction, Colorado; Greeley Independence Stampede & Country Jam; June 24 & 26 - Warm weather, large crowds, and lots of dust greeted Huey Lewis and the News in Colorado this past weekend. On Thursday evening over 10,000 boot stomping fans were not disappointed at the Greeley Independence Stampede. After the rock group Kansas finished their set, the News took the stage and won unanimous approval with a mix of 15 "new songs, old songs, and some a cappella songs." The songs played were the same each night and were as follows: "(She's) Some Kind of Wonderful," "My Other Woman's Got Another Man," "Doin' it all for my Baby," "Heart & Soul," "Power of Love," "60 Minute Man," "It's Alright," "Heart of Rock and Roll," "If This Is It," "He Don't Know," "But It's Alright," "I Want a New Drug," and "We're Not Here for a Long Time, but We're Here for a Good Time." Then came the encore, which included "Couple Days Off," and "Workin' for a Livin'."
Huey impressed many with an incredible harp solo before the last song of the night. Many of the cowboys in attendance were surprised that the Bay Area rock icon could go toe to toe with their favorite country harp players. The solo was an extended play that showed off vintage Huey talents. When the band first came out for the encore, Huey said, "I know, you want to hear some new slow ballads that we've written." Then they slowly worked into a bluesy impromptu for about two minutes before Huey exclaimed, "Ah screw it, let's rock!" and then Bill initiated "Couple Days Off."
Saturday night found the News in Grand Junction, CO at Country Jam USA.
Evidently this event was held in this portion of the Colorado River basin
because Death Valley was already booked. Despite the hot and dusty conditions,
the News still managed to steal the show. According to security personnel
at the event, the previous night Reba McEntire was a big disappointment,
and could not even get the fans to stand.
However, Huey and the boys had over 30,000 dancing in the aisles for almost
all of the tunes. The harp solo was a big favorite again and Huey was
leading the crowd with a lot of fist pumping and shouting, "mighty, mighty,
mighty!" Each night during the song "But It's Alright," a shapely cowgirl
came onstage to hold Huey's glockenspiel.
Without a doubt, two rockin' concerts were enjoyed by the cowboys of Colorado. They are sure to be asking themselves when they will be hearing the News again.
In other "news," Huey reveled this weekend that he will be flying to LA next week to film some final scenes with Gwyneth Paltrow for their movie "Duets." This movie will not be released until October at the earliest or next spring at the latest. Also, an unconfirmed rumor about the band is that the News' next album (which is completed, except for some small production work) will be released at the same time the movie comes out, to capitalize on publicity. Hopefully the world will not have to wait that long until the next News album hits the streets.
