Huey leaps off the drum platform

Moments define the band's Indiana concert

A Huey Lewis & the News show can be defined by the moments in the evening that stand out in your mind. On Friday night, it was these little moments that made the show memorable:

The audience, young and old, playing with four beach balls before the start of the show, cheering those who could serve a ball into the second deck.

The line of fans waiting up to twenty minutes to purchase shirts, hats, and signed CDs, spending fifty dollars apiece while the lone sales person tried to keep pace.

The wave of enthusiasm for the band as Huey took the stage, starting the show with "Long Time/Good Time".

The chagrinned look on the face of an older woman as her daughters in the front row lifted her up onto the stage with Huey during a song.

Flashbulbs going off in the audience during the a cappella set like a Michael Jordan press conference.

Huey pausing between songs to read a fan's note, having difficulty, and accepting a pair of reading glasses from an audience member.

The way "Heart & Soul" lifted the crowd to its feet for the final half hour of the show.

Huey poking fun at the aging audience (and band) as he looked at his watch in deciding whether to play another song and said "It is close to 10:30 - I mean, you won't even get home until almost 11:00").

As far as the music, Huey & the News played the typical set on this tour, including old favorites like "Do You Believe In Love" and "Back In Time" and working in six songs from Plan B and the band has never sounded better. Music highlights included the extended harmonica intro and conclusion during "Heart of Rock & Roll" and Stef Burns' guitar work through out the show. Stef has a less refined, more aggressive style than Chris Hayes and it helped breath life into some of the News classics without changing the good-time spirit. The band was hot and this show was an ideal start to a holiday weekend.
