Summer Tour in Review

By "Razor" Rob Cole
HLN Today reporter

The 2004 Summer Tour was nothing but successful for Huey Lewis & The News...survey says, "The Heart of Rock and Roll is still beating!" It was this signature song the band busted loose to get the party rockin' and crowd to its feet night after night!!

It was nothing but a good time on every stop of The 2004 Summer Tour as the band continued to play its wide selection of hits. If you were able to catch several shows, you might have noticed slight nuances The News have put into most of their reportoire to catch even the most loyal of fans off guard.

There were promises of new material on the way but as Huey told Washington D.C., "We're not doin' the new songs until we get the old ones right!!!" Of course, that was the same evening and inaugural appearance of "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um" (originally recorded by Major Lance) in their acapella set. It wasn't a new song but a great addition none the less. The song featured vocal solos by Johnny Colla and Sean Hopper.

The band sounded great but the featured soloist of the evening was Stef Burns who some people have stated is worth the price of admission itself. Stef sounded very relaxed and gave the impression that his sound is more "bluesier" than the norm. If the band does muster up a dozen or so new songs, it would be great to have Stef record on his first Huey Lewis & The News record. Time will tell...

A lot of the songs that were featured throughout the 2004 Summer Tour were:

  • The Heart Of Rock & Roll
  • So Little Kindness
  • Thank You #29
  • New World (aka I Want A New Drug and Small World)
  • Heart & Soul
  • The Power Of Love
  • If This Is It
  • It's Alright
  • Bad Is Bad
  • Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um
  • Back In Time
  • Workin' For A Livin'
  • Do You Believe In Love
  • But It's Alright
  • Doing It All For My Baby
  • Walking On A Thin Line
  • Jacob's Ladder
  • We're Not Here For A Long Time (But We're Here For A Good Time)
  • (Too) Hip To Be Square

2005 could be a surprising year for many Huey Lewis & The News fans...new songs, refreshing takes on "old" material and great music from one of America's legendary Rock and Roll institutions - Huey Lewis & The News!!!!
